Describe the cake, details and techniques:
In this cake I wanted to reflect the styles, textures and lifestyle of the harbour, seaside and boating. To create this special theme I used colors and patterns of the sea, including shades of blue and white, stripes and accents of silver. I contrasted these details with textures such as nautical maps, ship’s mooring rope and industrial metal, including anchors.

Bottom tier was made using the decoupage technique using torn pieces of wafer paper. I dusted the striped tiers to create a vintage look to the cake.

Finally I added skull magnolias in addition to the heavy metal anchor.

What is the inspiration for this winning cake?
This cake was made for my husband anniversary (yep, only our daughter has a yearly birthday cake...other family members get a cake from me only on anniversaries). The theme is nautical because he is a mariner. And when I think of nautical - navy and white automatically come to my mind. By keeping these two as a base, it was easy to work on some details. I had fun with the playful touches and I think I made it "my way."
How much time did you spend creating this cake?
From beginning to the end – three full days and the ropes took more time then I expected!
What do you do while you work?
I always have the TV on. I don’t like working in silence. I don’t listen or watch, it just runs as a background.
