Cake of the Month:
Describe the cake, details and techniques: I wanted the design to be regal and to carry a few techniques and trends without looking overcrowded. For the bottom tiers I chose hexagonal shaped cakes as I particularly think they are quite a statement and also rare. These two tiers have a very faint marble effect in greens adorned by geometric stripes hand painted in bronze. There is a crown of Gypsophila around to soften the otherwise hard lines of the shape and the stripes.
The middle tier is a mixed technique. I love how sugar sheet prints are now trending but I also love painting - so I painted on top of a printed sugar sheet with Chinoiserie details and to finish this tier, I piped scrolls around the edges and little dots on top of the sugar sheet painted in copper.
The next tier is a marble tier with a beautiful rich green mix with a vibrant green and white. Then the very top tier is a plain green tier adorned with white sugar peonies, billy balls, sugar eucalyptus, extra greenery and copper painted eucalyptus.
What is the inspiration for this winning cake?
The inspiration behind was royalty. I wanted it to look like it was taken out of a French period drama - but with a modern twist. Simple and elegant was what I had in mind but also dramatic.
How much time did you spend creating this cake?
From flowers to finishings - it took 5 days!
What do you do while you work?
It varies - sometimes I have music on (Depeche Mode gets me going) or I have a TV/Ipad in the background for noise and sometimes, especially when taping flowers, I like to be in complete silence which is quite relaxing!
