Describe the cake, details and techniques: This cake was made for the very first competition I ever entered. I did not place, but for me it was not about winning or losing but about challenging my skills and putting myself out there for others to judge - which is not in my comfort zone. I custom made and now sell the mold that I used to create the bottom bark tier. The molds are all unique with no two the same.

I incorporate a painting technique used in ceramics that really brings it to life and gives it the most real life feel of any other bark tier out there. The petal ruffle tier was very time consuming and new to me, but I loved the effect especially with the heart windows.

The bird tier was all hand painted in cocoa butter and crystal color dusts.

It was my very first time trying this technique, but then everything on this cake was a first for me. I was stumped for the longest time about what I was going to do for the top tier, but decided on the birdhouse - as it truly fit. I used many new skills like paneling and making flower buds to make it come to life, but really enjoyed being able to find cheap inexpensive items to make it work. As a cake decorator, we don't always have the means for high dollar items, so to find something worth .75 cents to work and bring so much impact - really makes me happy.

What is the inspiration for this winning cake?
I saw these hatboxes in a store one time and this bird painting was on them. I turned to my daughter and said, “I am buying that box and I am going to make a cake out of it,” and that is exactly what I did.

How much time did you spend creating this cake?
This cake took about 30 hours to complete. The ruffle tier being the most time consuming of them all.

What do you do while you work?
I have a very large family, 5 children: 4 still at home ages 15, 14, 12 and 11 so my house is very noisy. If I'm working while kids and hubby are out of the house then I work in complete silence. It is the only time my house and my mind are completely quiet! (lol)

Congratulations Sharon!
