Satin Ice Cake of the Month:
Sadra Sarfraz
Name: Sadra Sarfraz, Vancouver, B.C., Canada
Business name: The Statement Cake Facebook: thestatmentcake Instagram: @thestatementcake
Describe the cake, details and techniques: I wanted all the focus to be on the floral details so I kept the outer surface simple. Each tier (both faux and real cake) were cut in half and covered in fondant separately. I had hot glued all the Styrofoam tiers together for easier transportation. I then used a combination of simple sugar and silk flowers and leaves to cover the exposed surface on the “inside” of the cake. The border was made from a silicone mold and painted gold; it added the perfect delicate touch to frame the floral details.
What is the inspiration for this winning cake?
Last year, I went through a stage where I had an immense fascination with creating split cakes; I loved the unique design and storytelling opportunities. The overall theme represents the coming union of a newlywed couple; their blossomed characteristics and personalities coming together to complement one another.
I found inspiration through previous split cake designs I had created along with beautiful inspirational cake images I had found on Pinterest. The colors were reflective of beautiful traditional Pakistani wedding colors.
How much time did you spend creating this cake?
I spent approximately 12-15 hours on this cake.
What do you do while you work?
I usually listen to podcasts while I work. I never like to waste learning opportunities!
Congratulations Sadra!
