Describe the cake, details and techniques: This cake was made for Cake Central Magazine and was featured in their travel issue.  The theme was Vintage Maps and Trains and I was inspired to create this wedding cake. I wanted the top tier to look like a vase and added the element of vertical railway tracks to give it added height visually. These tracks appear prominently on 2 tiers and were painted in gold. The first and third tiers were hand-painted with edible dusts to give it a vintage look and added texture. I made the bottom tier in the shape of a travel box with a map on it. In keeping with the overall travel theme, the lock on the box was created in the shape of a compass. I made a total of 20 roses to decorate the top and middle tiers.

What is the inspiration for this winning cake?

The magazine provided an inspiration photo and they wanted each artist to use that picture to design a cake that would capture the essence of a travel-based wedding.

How much time did you spend creating this cake?

I made this cake over a period of one and a half weeks as that was the time frame for the cake to be submitted to the magazine. I have a 5 years old son, so I work mostly at night after his bedtime or while he is in school. The flowers took the maximum amount of time – about 5 days.

What do you do while you work?

I usually enjoy working in complete silence!! I find that I can devote my energy better when I have no other distractions. I mostly end up working through the night when on a time bound project.
