The in's and outs of:
HOW TO JOIN:
The question has been asked numerous times, "How can I join a collaboration?" I'll start by saying that in most collaborations, the members are personally invited to join. In more recent years, I've watched the number of collaborations per annum explode. This is good news for people looking to join. ASK AROUND; feel comfortable in asking collaboration organizers for more information. There are several successful, enjoyable and recurring collaborations that welcome new blood and new talent! Also, look to join Facebook groups, they’re good communities for bakers and decorators. CakesDecor is another great resource for tapping into activity in the baking and decorating community.
Participating in collaborations early on in my career gave me more self-confidence in my abilities and allowed me to connect with more bakers. By connecting with a larger group of people in the cake & baking community, I was able to take classes and practice new skills which in turn encouraged me to create better cakes, cookies, and sugar art.
Collaborations aren't done for fame but for fun, in celebration of an event or occasion. It’s an opportunity to experiment outside of their creative comfort zone and grow their skills. There are also philanthropic collaborations that are created to raise awareness or funds for specific charities or causes.
ONCE YOU’VE JOINED:
The collaboration leader will set any theme, due-dates, photo-upload info and any other details. It’s crucial to stay on theme and to contribute in a timely manner. Sugar collaborations on Facebook are a dime-a-dozen, and it’s very easy to get in over your head with how many you participate in so make sure that you have the time to participate before joining.
HOW TO RUN A COLLAB:
I advise anyone looking to start a collaboration, to ASK FOR HELP from an experienced collaborator. It can get overwhelming and mishaps may happen. Don't be afraid to accept help, and pace yourself.
- Decide what theme you'd like for the collab
- How many people you'd like to manage
- Who do you want to invite (open to all or invite only)
- When do you want the collab revealed
- Set a schedule that allows you enough time to gather assets, prepare and launch the reveal.
- Design a 'reveal page' that is separate from the 'group page' (where members are invited into) with a unique look and feel.
