After beginning to bake as a hobby, Elina of Bake-a-boo Cakes quickly discovered her undeniable talent. See how she turned her favorite pastime into a full-time career!
Brief history of your business and how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved baking but I didn’t get into cake decorating until my son’s first birthday. I made my first tiered cake - it was a buttercream frosted cake with fondant décor/topper…and straight away I fell in love with cake decorating. It became my obsession until now! In the beginning it was just a hobby - it was never intended to be a business. What I wanted was to create a blog where I could share my baking journey. But, orders kept coming in week by week, I would be making cakes for family and friendsand without realizing - it spread outside that circle. I started getting calls and orders from strangers. So I thought, okay lets see where I could go with this. Maybe I meant to do this as a business…. and here I am now!
How were you first introduced to Satin Ice?
I had heard good reviews about Satin Ice through American baking/cake blogs and Buddy Valastro, but back then it wasn’t available here in New Zealand. I can’t remember exactly when, but one day I heard that Satin Ice was now available in NZ. I remember I was super excited and couldn’t wait to get a pail and try it out. I found one at a local wholesaler and I just loved it! All the good reviews that I’ve been hearing were spot on!
Is there one particular project that stands out as significant or that you are particularly proud of?
It’s hard to choose as there are lots of cake projects that I loved - but there is one project that I just did recently for Cakes of Middle Earth collaboration celebrating Peter Jackson. I made my first full 3D Gollum cake. Very different from what I usually do. It was challenging but I had so much fun making it – and it was very special to me.
I love clean design…cute… and pretty things! That’s it! Ha ha … but honestly I’m always open to any style. If tomorrow somebody asked me to make a super scary cake I will do it!
I have lots of favorites so it’s hard to choose. But if I have to pick some these would be my top three.
