Satin Ice Cake of the Month:
A geode cake by a rockin' cake artist stole the spotlight and crowned Christy Seguin with the title of Cake of the Month! Go behind the winning cake to see what inspired her and how long all those sugar flowers took. . .
Name: Christy Seguin - Austin, Texas, USA
Education: BBA & MBA in Marketing & Sport Management, from the University of Georgia, “Culinary”: the ‘Mama & Grandma School of Country Cookin’!
Business name: Cakes ROCK!!!
Describe the cake, details and techniques: I fell in love with the geodes as soon as I saw them and was looking for an excuse to use them. I designed the cake around the geodes, with marbled fondant, but I wanted a springtime woodland feel, so the moss, succulents & woodsy spring flowers added color. I did light up the geode topper so it glowed from within, which looked so cool at the party!
What is the inspiration for this winning cake?
My mother in law’s 75th birthday party. I incorporated her birthstone & favorite colors in the geodes, & she absolutely loves flowers. I have an amazing mother in law that I love dearly so I wanted to make her birthday super special!
How much time did you spend creating this cake?
There were at least 30 hours in the flowers alone. The geodes are pretty quick to create. I made several just to play and to have plenty to pick from. Overall I’d say about 40 hours counting baking, stacking, etc.
What do you do while you work? I personally prefer to listen to 80’s music, as I’m a total 80’s Rocker Chick. If I need even more energy, than I go with Heavy Metal workout music. But my ‘Cake Minions’ are young ladies and they love movies. So usually we watch movies all day long. One of the perks of being a cottage baker!
